1-Hour Landscapes by nicholaskole 1-Hour Landscapes by nicholaskole
I've been teaching myself how to Watercolor recently and here's some slightly boring academic work in that vein. Each of these little paintings lasted exactly 1-hour as per the assignment. I thought some out there might want to see some of my less fantastical work :)

Wow. These are gorgeous! I'm fairly jealous. =D
I'm working on learning watercolor for my Ap portfolio for my high school class. Sadly, it's not turning out too well. Do you have any general tips that you can give?
nicholaskole Featured By Owner Nov 7, 2008  Professional Digital Artist
hmmm...let's see. I Always start with a base-tone...I just wash over the whole piece...saving whatever whites I know i'm going to use. I always make sure I have a relatively tight pencil sketch underneath so that I know where I'm going. Work from reference, be patient and let each layer dry before you go into it (use a hairdryer if that doesn't work) That's probably the most important don't want to be painting wet-into-wet unless you really intend to. Hopefully that's helpful, but really it's just a matter of practice! good luck!

A hair dryer? Man! WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT?! Genius. lol.
That's awesome. Thanks bunch for the tips. <3

Are these froma ctual places? If so, do you mind sharing the secret places names? They look like beautiful places not only to paint but to be in, in general.

TryingToDefyGravity Featured By Owner Jun 8, 2008
Those are lovely! The lighting and coloring are just beautiful. Are they real places you went to or just from your imagination?

This is a really good exercise. Did you do these from reference then?
nicholaskole Featured By Owner Apr 25, 2008  Professional Digital Artist
Yeah, definitely. Alot of different places around Austria and Germany...not yet adept at creating my own 'scapes (I found that out quick) :/
Scummy Featured By Owner Apr 25, 2008  Professional Digital Artist
Just curious! It still seems like an excellent thing to do. I was thinking about trying to do some myself.
nicholaskole Featured By Owner Apr 26, 2008  Professional Digital Artist
I definitely reccomend it! It can be very freeing to impose a short time limit and just go.
lemonflower Featured By Owner Apr 24, 2008
Nick, you liar, Mary Jane's been teaching you to watercolor.

These are quite nice, though.

Very nice for only spending an hour on them. I'd work a little more on lights and darks, and showing that there is a light source. Although the sun can be a very ambient light source.

I think they're great

Really beautiful, I know that watercolor can be a bit messy but you really seem to have a good control over them.

hms. i would say you've got it down, but that's only because i know next to nothing and judge by prettiness. :)

GAH! Those are beautiful! I love all the colors and the enviting atmospheres they give off. The third one makes me want to sing "THE HIIIIILLS ARE ALIIIIVE WITH THE SOUND OF MUUUUSIIIIC!!!!" at the top of my lungs. I think I could see myself living there. Wonderful, wonderful job. Your watercolors are amazing.

Really fantastically done :) Despite watercolour being my forte, I despise doing landscapes so I am even more impressed by these. Just great
