Abandoned Character Studies by nicholaskole Abandoned Character Studies by nicholaskole
A set of character studies I just completed for another job possibility that didn't work out :p (that's been happening alot recently...just a scheduling problem this time, but I've been getting a lot of "no")
Anyways, these are five of the main characters in a prompt I was asked to respond to, more than that I cannot say. Except that one of them was named Octavian. Which was totally cool. Enjoy!

I love the use of wrinkles! My favourites are the third and fifth guys. They could be the same age, but one is obviously a much more jubilant fellow, with his crow's feet. The other has those frown lines that tell you he's a bit of a pessimist. I also like the way that your characters have small eyes.

Usually I don't like small eyes, but you make them small and yet make sure they have colour. I think that's what bothers me about eyes, is when the artist doesn't give them colour. You also do a lot with nose shape and mouths, as well as brows. It's obvious you pay attention to all the differences in how people look, the little details that normally get overlooked, such as people smiling differently or brows being arched differently.

Hey, thanks! I love faces and expressions. I'm always concerned about repeating myself or becoming one of those artists whose characters always look the same...so I've been going out and doodling from life around the city. It helps keep your mental-library of facial features broad :) I do tend to like the small eyes, though...Idunno why...it's kind of a recent thing.

I am in love with your style (the fact the woman reminds me of Mucha's Art Nouveau doesn't help either :p...).
The lines are neat, perfect and controlled, the colouring is brilliant, and the expressions... Gah, the expressions! *dies*

Whoah, hello again! :) Thank you muchly! But I beg to differ: it is your style that is, in fact, so 'freakin rad'. Seriously, though I saw your Family Man portraits and then watched the Witch video you linked to and got all inspired and churned these out :D Yeah, it's a small Intarwebs.

These are stunning! I especially love the man second from the left. All of the details of his head then melding into his thick neck; it's spectacular! Though... I'm sure he probably wouldn't love that description of him. haha. These are just extremely special though. Sorry to hear the project didn't work out. :(

Heheh..noticed I seem to have a problem with developing male characters WITHOUT facial hair, have you? It's kind of a mission of mine...to sneak facial hair into everything I do. And I suppose with the girl it's a metaphorical sort of beard?
You can see it in her eyes.

Thanks, though! Glad you like em :)
