Color Keys - King David by nicholaskole Color Keys - King David by nicholaskole
This week for Shanth Enjeti...
We were assigned "6 color keys (4in x 2in) from an epic story involving a quest, a kingdom, and a battle with a great beast". I wrestled with this early in the week and was generally pretty colossally unproductive until yesterday when I decided I was gonna do moments from King David (which is an amazing story, that I hope to one day work on in much greater scope and detail).

I always wrestle with color, but I'm beginning to enjoy it (Shanth's fault) and these started as a struggle, but wound up being alot of fun to do. It's a great exercise to work with these little things, and I think I'll do more...maybe even do one a day during wintersession.

They're not in chronological order. But for those unfamiliar with the story, the moments are:

David and Goliath - The Ark Returns to Jerusalem
The Death of Saul - David and Bathsheba
David Annointed King - Saul and the Witch of Endor

I am also compelled to work on a King David's story! The story is very fascinating and inspiring if done correctly; but I'm so sad that nobody has done it right. I love your color concepts, they communicate the emotion of each scene - hopefully a few of us artist can get together and surprise the world with an epic telling of this story ;)

Saul's story is one of my favorites, being most fond of Paul the Apostle's writings.... these are so well done, thank you for posting/sharing.

Awesome colors and composition

The results fit the criteria so well you'd like it was set up just to reach this conclusion. I can understand difficulty with color but I think you did an outstanding job with the Bathseba and Ark section. The Ark Illustration is probably my favorite because of the way you've made the ark so bright that you're drawn right into it, almost as if it was a light source of its own and the people just shadows around it.

Very awesome color keys, instant fave =)

Wow this is incredible, wonderful composition and color, the most stunning are the scene when the Ark is returned to Jerusalem and David confronting Goliath, wow that one is super pretty with the contrasting blue sky and sand. I really enjoyed this, of course because of how beautiful it is but mainly because of the story behind it, how you illustrated these great scenes and how special they have always been to me. I would have liked if David and Jonathan's close relationship was shown but that's just because I am fond of that pair of friends :) I would really hope that you could make beautiful art like this, perferably Biblical art, in the future.

... This is going to stay in my head all week. I was listening to Ofra Haza's "A Ballad for a King" when I opened it, and... they blew my mind. Together. Congratulations.

I think this is very beautiful, and you are truly blessed with the gift of artistry. As one who appreciates fine work as well as a believer in the G-d of King David and Saul I was wondering if you had a larger version of this image and if you could be kind enough to upload it? I would be very grateful, but if not, so be it. Peace be with you.

I just love seeing Bible art on dA, it really makes my day!! This is fantastic, I love the flat colors and the gradients you used, and you portrayed all of the scenes so wonderfully! It's simple, yet it tells the story :)

David you crazy! Don't look at Bathsheeba when she's trying to take a bath!

i always loved david...especially the soap opra-esk aspect [[i dont think that's acctually a word...]] but David and Goliath is incredable... as is David and Bathsheba. and ... well i love it.

these are wonderfully emotve and the colour really works to highten both this and the atmosphere.

pannel 6: the green here creates a real etherial vibe which lends itself to the ghostly figure (there's something other-wordly about this vauge, transparant spector with it's billowing clothes), allowing it to become a potent light source.

pannel 3: i love the way the clouds in the background seem to be scraping along this desolte secen. the red tones bring to mind blood which seems appropreate considering what's going on here. the hands here, as in the next pannel do a great job of displaying emotion, be it horror or anger. despite the fact we never see a face in it, you still do a fantastic job of showcasing the feelings of the charaters here.

pannel 1: goliath feels imense while david's fantastically isolated, picked out from the sandy back drop as a lonly dash of red. he jumps out though, despite the distance seperating the two comabatance.

Amazing! I love the fact that you take so many of your designs from the Bible. People never realize how outlandish those stories are and never take advantage of them. I've never seen an artist do it so well.
AgnesPterry Featured By Owner Dec 6, 2007
That . . . is sooooo awesome. It's these kinds of stories that make me wonder how anyone can view the Old Testament as boring. ^.^

They look like they could be stills from an animated movie. You've really nailed that cinematic narrative. I think I like the top two the best, wonderful angles and evocative lighting.

Such an awesome concept. I love how neatly graphic these turned out, little color thumbnails that would really help keep a design element to these if you were to make them into bigger finished pieces or scenes. Very well done!

Good stuff! I think by now you've more than proven your ability to convey... well just about anything, without words or text. It's downright Samurai-Jack-level awesomeness.
