Wrapping up this round of commissions is an odd one for :iconvictoranomalous:

Apparently there's a culture of chess playing in prison, specifically on death row between inmates confined to their cells, played verbally as they call out moves to eachother! And that...kind of...prison mind chess was the prompt for this illustration.

Was a good opportunity to experiment with technique and style- not sure where this is all going, if anywhere. But it's fun to work this way- very informed by my time spent sculpting in zbrush for my former employer- it's good to try some things I've learned in 3d that I haven't used in my 2d work.

That is an interesting concept: both the illustration and the idea of Prison Chess being played like that. Cool way to illustrate it, too!

Loving the angles. It almost gives this character the feeling that he's been carved :)

cool- yeah, that's what I was getting at when I mentioned I'd been sculpting in zbrush- figuring out a more volume-based aesthetic. In a weird way, keeping it pretty flat and graphic :/

Wow, haha I totally missed that comment at the bottom of the description! Well, I guess that's a good sign that you hit the nail on the head with it :P I like it though, it's got a bit of an art deco feel to it.
